The Consultation in Phytotherapy

The Consultation in Phytotherapy
By:"Peter Conway"
Published on 2010-09-20 by Elsevier Health Sciences

E-book Library:"Medical"

The Consultation in Phytotherapy considers the means by which the herbal practitioner can seek to appreciate the patient's predicament. Written for both herbal medicine students and practitioners, the book takes a radical approach, challenging readers to reflect on the nature, scope and methods of the consultation in herbal practice. The author asserts that the effective consultation represents a therapeutic act in and of itself, and proposes strategies for maximising and realising this therapeutic potential. The book provides both a complement to, and a critique of, mainstream texts on clinical diagnosis and case management. It contrasts the herbal consultation with that occurring in conventional medicine and offers rationales, arguments and tools aimed at developing an enhanced capacity to achieve profound results in the herbal clinical encounter. About the Author Peter Conway is a practising medical herbalist and has been involved in developing and teaching on several BSc and MSc courses in herbal medicine. He is the President of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy and a Director of the European Herbal and Traditional medicine Practitioners Association. Peter helped draft the National Professional Standards for Herbal Medicine and sat on the Department of Health Steering Group on the Statutory Regulation of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine.

Published on 2008 by ProQuest

E-book Library:

The increased use of herbal supplements in the pre-surgical population can cause adverse outcomes to occur when their use is combined with anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the CRNAs' knowledge of eight popular herbal supplements, personal beliefs concerning herbal use, and whether CRNAs complete an assessment of herbal supplements. A random sample of 300 CRNAs obtained from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) was sent a multiple-choice descriptive survey. The response was 28.3%, (n = 85). CRNAs agreed herbal supplements are medically active (81.4%), use can affect surgical outcomes (74.9%), and 74% agree herbal supplement use should be assessed preoperatively. Mean knowledge scores of adverse interactions was 16.1%; with 30.3% indicating confidence in their familiarity with herbal supplement and anesthesia interactions. 18.6% identified the ASA recommendations regarding herbal supplement use. The lack of confidence and low knowledge scores necessitates the need for further education.

When Technology Fails

When Technology Fails
By:"Matthew Stein"
Published on 2008-08-18 by Chelsea Green Publishing

E-book Library:"House & Home"

There’s never been a better time to “be prepared.” Matthew Stein’s comprehensive primer on sustainable living skills—from food and water to shelter and energy to first-aid and crisis-management skills—prepares you to embark on the path toward sustainability. But unlike any other book, Stein not only shows you how to live “green” in seemingly stable times, but to live in the face of potential disasters, lasting days or years, coming in the form of social upheaval, economic meltdown, or environmental catastrophe. When Technology Fails covers the gamut. You’ll learn how to start a fire and keep warm if you’ve been left temporarily homeless, as well as the basics of installing a renewable energy system for your home or business. You’ll learn how to find and sterilize water in the face of utility failure, as well as practical information for dealing with water-quality issues even when the public tap water is still flowing. You’ll learn alternative techniques for healing equally suited to an era of profit-driven malpractice as to situations of social calamity. Each chapter (a survey of the risks to the status quo; supplies and preparation for short- and long-term emergencies; emergency measures for survival; water; food; shelter; clothing; first aid, low-tech medicine, and healing; energy, heat, and power; metalworking; utensils and storage; low-tech chemistry; and engineering, machines, and materials) offers the same approach, describing skills for self-reliance in good times and bad. Fully revised and expanded—the first edition was written pre-9/11 and pre-Katrina, when few Americans took the risk of social disruption seriously—When Technology Fails ends on a positive, proactive note with a new chapter on \
